Mission Statement
The two main functions of the Peromyscus Genetic Stock Center are:
I. To furnish genetically defined, variant and normal, living
Peromyscus or their tissues to investigators and educators for research and
instruction. Associated with this function the Stock Center is
committed to:
- breed and preserve mutant genetic types for potential future use.
- serve as a depository for newly discovered genetic variants.
II. To improve Peromyscus as a laboratory animal resource.
The mission of the Center is not only to serve as a source of living animals.
It also includes activities designed to enhance the research potential of this
important genus. Such activities include:
- development of Peromyscus genomics, including a linkage map and
associated molecular reagents for genetic analyses and microarray
technology.
- developing the technology for embryo cryopreservation and application of
reverse genetics to the species.
- serving as a general source of Peromyscus information by
maintaining a reference collection of publications (especially from the
older Peromyscus literature), maintaining a web-based repository of
Peromyscus information (PeroBase), publishing the Peromyscus
Newsletter, preserving materials of historical interest concerning
Peromyscus, and attendance at national meetings to publicize the Stock
Center.
